Why Your Google Business Profile Now Matters for AI Search

By Amit · 2 August 2026 · 6 min read

Your Google Business Profile is now one of the main things AI assistants read about your business. When someone asks Gemini or Google AI Overviews for a dentist in Indiranagar or a CA firm in Andheri, the answer is built largely from Google local data, and your profile is where that data comes from. Other assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity reach the same information indirectly, through directories, review sites and pages that copy your profile details. A thin or outdated profile does not just cost you map views any more, it quietly removes you from the shortlist an AI reads out.

What does a Google Business Profile have to do with AI answers at all?

AI assistants do not hold a private database of Indian businesses. When a question is local and specific, they fetch information at the time of asking, and the local layer of Google is the densest, most structured source available for that. Your profile supplies the name, category, address, hours, phone number, services and reviews in a machine readable form that needs no guessing.

This matters because AI systems prefer facts they can confirm. A business with a complete, consistent profile is easy to state confidently. A business whose hours are blank, whose category is wrong and whose phone number differs from its website is a risk the assistant will simply route around by naming a competitor instead.

What should I fix first in my Google Business Profile for AI search?

Start with the fields that decide whether you are eligible to be named at all, not the decorative ones:

  • Primary category — this is the single strongest signal about what you actually do. Pick the most specific category that fits, not the broadest one. A category of Restaurant when you are a South Indian vegetarian restaurant costs you every query where the cuisine is mentioned.
  • Services or products list — each service you add becomes a separate fact about you. Owners often add three and stop. If you offer fourteen services, list fourteen, in the words customers actually use.
  • Business description — write plainly what you do, for whom, and where. This is not the place for slogans. An assistant can quote a clear sentence; it cannot quote a tagline.
  • Hours, including holiday hours — open now is one of the most common filters behind a local AI answer. Blank or stale hours make you unsafe to recommend.
  • Service areas — if you travel to customers, name the localities. This is how you become the answer for the neighbourhood, not just the pin.

Which fields do most businesses leave blank?

In audit after audit the same boxes are empty. The attributes section, which covers things like wheelchair access, parking, home delivery, women led, or accepted payment methods. The question and answer section on the profile, where the owner can post and answer common questions themselves. The services list beyond the first two or three entries. And the photos, which are often three blurry pictures from the year the shop opened.

These are not vanity fields. Each attribute you tick is a filter you become eligible for. Every question you answer on your own profile is a short, quotable piece of text tied directly to your business name. That is the exact shape of content AI assistants like to reuse, which is the same reason a well written FAQ page works on your website.

Do reviews on my profile change what AI says about me?

Yes, and less through the star rating than through the words. Review text is where customers describe what you actually did, in their own language. When someone asks an assistant for a clinic that is good with nervous patients, or a workshop that handles diesel engines, the phrase often gets matched against review text rather than anything you wrote yourself.

The honest way to influence this is to ask, at the right moment, for a specific review. Not a rating, a description. A customer who writes about the exact job you did for them adds a fact about your business to the record. Never buy reviews or write them yourself; beyond the policy risk, fake reviews are generic by nature and generic text is the least useful kind for being cited.

Replying matters too. Your replies are your own text on a page Google controls, and they show a business that is active rather than abandoned.

How do I keep my profile and my website saying the same thing?

Mismatches are the quiet killer. Your profile says one address, your website footer says an older one. The profile lists eight services, the website lists five, and a third set appears on Justdial. Every difference weakens the assistant's confidence that these are all the same business.

Fix it in one sitting. Write down your business name exactly as you want it, your address, your phone number and your service list. Then make the profile, your website footer, your contact page and your main directory listings match that one version, character for character. If you have added structured data to your website, keep the LocalBusiness details identical to the profile as well; our guide on schema markup for small businesses covers what to add and in what order.

How do I check whether any of this is working?

There is no rank tracker for AI answers, so test it directly. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions a real customer would ask, phrased the way they would phrase them. Best orthodontist in Kothrud. Who does GST filing for small businesses in Surat. Note whether you appear, who does appear, and what the assistant says about them.

Repeat the same set of questions monthly and keep the answers in a simple sheet. You are looking for movement over weeks, not a score on any given day. The longer method is in our post on how to check if your business appears in ChatGPT.

FAQ

Does a Google Business Profile help if I have no physical shop?

Yes. Service area businesses can create a profile without displaying a street address, and list the localities they serve instead. For a consultant, an electrician or a home baker this is often the single fastest way to become findable locally.

How often should I update the profile?

Check it monthly and update the moment anything real changes, such as hours, a new service or a new phone number. Add photos and posts when you have something genuine to show. Regular small updates are better than one large cleanup a year.

Is the profile enough on its own, or do I still need a website?

You still need the website. The profile establishes the basic facts; your website is where the detail, the pricing, the case studies and the answers live, and it is the source an assistant links to when it wants to send someone somewhere. The two work as a pair.
